A Tribute to Dr Chandrakant Patil

Do you remember the name of Dr. Chandrakant Patil...probably no...because I am not talking about any film star or a cricketer or politician....to wo kaun the ?

He was a common man like one of us, with a noble vision. He came with Doctors for you team to serve flood affected people in Bihar from all the way Mumbai to Suapul. He was even very instrumental in organizing this trip. That itself shows his keenness towards serving the common man and society ...do I need to say anything more about him...

In rather a tragic incident on 21st September 2008, he was struck by lighting in kataiya village in Suapul district where he was camping to provide medical relief to the flood victims.

on this occasion I am putting here a brief write up about Dr. Patil in his own words:

I was born on 12/9/84 at Saturkhe village in Tal. Nandurbar which is now a district. Saturkhe is my mother’s hometown. My dad’s hometown is just 2 km. away from Saturkhe but it is in Dhule district.

We are a family of four; Mom, dad, younger sister Monika & myself.

When I was 3 months old my paternal grandfather ended his journey on this earth. I have no memories of him. Our family shifted to Lonkheda, Tal. Shahada, Dist. Nandurbar where my dad worked in a textile mill. We lived in a very small house located along river Gomati. My sister Monica was born here . My mom says that I was very quite baby & gave no troubles to her or anybody; whereas my sister troubled her in every possible way.

There was a Balwadi in Lonkheda where I went for few months. My grandma used to accompany me. After that I went to another school for few months. I don’t remember name of those schools b’coz I was just a kid then. We then shifted to Dist. Buldhana, at Sakharkheda village as my father changed his job.

We lived in company quarters. School at this place was about 4-5 km away from home with dense jungle & big nallah interrupting the way. Hence mom & dad did not send me to school. As a result I missed school for around two years. I just used to play whole day with friends.

Thereafter we shifted to Dist. Yavatmal, Tal. Pusad, at Babasaheb Naik Textile Mill where my father worked. We lived in company colony which was again about 4 km away from nearest village Pimpalgaon where the school was located. But now I was older about 6 years of age & I wanted to go to school. There were many many children of my age as well as older than me, but they seldom went to school. Pimpalgaon had a primary school. There was jungle spanning around 1 km along the way to school. I was scared of jungle; hence I used to run the distance through jungle. I never missed school. In school, I had many friends like Vitthal, Mahesh & others. Since other students never studied & I did b’coz of my mother’s insistence; teacher liked me very much. I liked Dubey Sir very much. We had Pujari Sir who was partially deaf & this used to create quite a few jokes.

Since I stood second in class & teachers liked me very much they asked my dad to allow me to appear for combined exam of second & third standard, so that one year would be saved. In this manner I jumped from second to fourth standard bypassing third.

My joy, however, was short-lived as my dad was again transferred; now to Dist.Nagpur Tal. Saoner in Perfect Spinners Ltd. at Khurajgaon. This place was different from previous places as it was bigger & more modern. School was also bigger. It was however difficult for me to adjust here. My knowledge was woefully inadequate as compared to other students. I was unable to perform calculations as they were not taught to us in my previous school. My teachers Ghate madam & Pawaskar sir told this to my dad & asked him to enroll me in Std. 3 instead of Std. 4. But my dad refused it. He asked them to grant him a period of seven days after which they could test me along with their top five students. If I did not top the test he would enroll me in directly in Std. 1! I was standing there when this discussion occurred. I felt embarrassed that I was reason for my dad’s anguish. Next seven days, my dad taught me math in every possible way he could. If I made mistakes he did beat me. I never stopped crying for those 7 days. But I also learned most during that period. After 7 days teachers did notice change in me & decided not to take any test.

My dad was overjoyed & told me that I had potential & should not consider myself lesser than others in class. I understood what he said & begin believing in myself. Soon I became favourite of Ghate madam. If I missed school any day, she visited my house to see if I was sick. After 6 months we shifted to Company Quarters. Here I learned newer games like carrom, chess, badminton, cricket etc.I also learned to speak English. I made many friends here like Amit, Mantu, Saurabh, Jagan, Dadu. We played together which resulted in many fights among us. But afterwards we made up with each other. For std. 5 I was admitted in Bhalerao High School. Here I appeared for Hindi Dnyan Prabodhini Exam which I passed with distinction. I was very good in English subject, hence my teachers advised my dad to enroll me in an English medium school. In this way I was admitted in St.John’s High School. There I studied till Std 8. Initially it was difficult to handle but slowly & steadily I made progress. Soon I was very much comfortable with all subjects in English. My favourite teacher was Dongare madam as she was very caring & patient.

My dad was again transferred to Dhule, our native district. He now worked in Jawahar textile Mill. I was admitted in N.S.B. Day School. Surana sir was our Principal & he was everybody’s favourite teacher including me. I thought I would come in merit list in Std. 10 Board exams. However my dream was shattered. I missed merit list by whisker. I, however, more than made up for it by acquiring 15 th rank in merit list of H.S.C. Board exams as well as standing 1 st in MH-CET in Dhule district

My dad was again transferred to Dhule, our native district. He now worked in Jawahar textile Mill. I was admitted in N.S.B. Day School. Surana sir was our Principal & he was everybody’s favourite teacher including me. I thought I would come in merit list in Std. 10 Board exams. However my dream was shattered. I missed merit list by whisker. I, however, more than made up for it by acquiring 15 th rank in merit list of H.S.C. Board exams as well as standing 1 st in MH-CET in Dhule district I wanted to pursue engineering but on insistence of my parents I was forced to take admission for MBBS in BJMC, Pune. I regretted my decision for a long time thereafter though I really enjoyed myself. The regret part was due to long duration & hectic schedule of medical education while fun part was due to newer friends, complete freedom for first time, hostel life etc.

I passed final MBBS exam with 1 st class. I went to Dhule for internship. I enjoyed it there though I had to work very hard.

I joined as Medical Officer at Kalambhir PHC. I worked for 6 months. Unlike my other colleagues I did like the job of a Medical Officer. I appeared for PG entrance & joined Seth G. S. M. C. to pursue post-graduation in Community Medicine.

My strengths, I feel lie in my calm & adaptable nature. I am always full of ideas. My greatest weakness is however my laziness.

I aim to join WHO or UNICEF after I finish my studies. I prefer to work in rural areas. I dream to do some useful & worthwhile work in my native districts Dhule & Nandurbar.

My hobbies include reading novels, trekking, rock-climbing, listening to music & traveling.
