Lightning Kills Maharashtra Doctor at Relief Camp in Supaul

In a rather tragic, though freak, accident, 25-year old doctor from Maharashtra Dr. Chandrakant Patil died on Sunday night when he was struck by lightning in Kataiya village in Supaul district where he was camping to provide medical relief to the flood victims.

Patil, a native of Dhule in Maharashtra, came to Bihar on September 18 as part of a 40-doctor team who volunteered to serve in Bihar's flood-hit districts at the behest of prominent film-maker Prakash Jha.

On Sunday night at around 10:30 pm, he, along with some of his colleagues, were relaxing in a makeshift tent when suddenly the tent was hit by lightning. While three men received non-life threatening burns, Patil was not so lucky and died on the spot.

His body was taken to a Supaul Hospital from where it was flown to the Patna Medical College Hospital where thousands of people turned up to get a last glimpse of the man who is considered a hero for his selfless act and the ultimate sacrifice he made while serving the people of Bihar.

Dr. Patil's body was later flown to Mumbai.

Bihar State Health Services Association Coordinator Dr. Ajay Kumar, in his eulogy, said that Dr. Patil deserved the highest civil honor for sacrificing his life while doing a noble work in Bihar.

"Though no amount of money could bring back Dr. Patil, I would ask the state government to provide Rs. 50 lakh to his family members in Maharashtra," Dr. Kumar said.

Dr. Patil was the only son of Umakant Patil. He graduated from Pune's B. J. Medical College and was pursuing a residency in preventive and social medicine at KEM Hospital.

Besides his father, Patil leaves behind his mother and a sister.
